How to Grow & Harvest Cumin

When to Plant

Grow cumin by directly sowing the seeds into your garden.  Make sure all threat of frost has passed, and plant seeds early in the season.

How to Plant

Choose a location that has full sun. Cumin prefers hot weather but can grow in moist and damp conditions as well.  Make sure your soil is well drained, and forgo any nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen will result in less fragrant seeds.

Water cumin plants during dry spells.

Plants are very sensitive to frost in both spring and fall.

When to Harvest

Once the pods have turned brown and are dry, they will open up and reseed themselves into the ground.  The trick to harvesting the seeds is to catch the pods before they open up fully or before they start to spill their seeds.  Harvest your plants and hang them upside down in a dry place. Allow them to dry completely.  Shake the plants inside of a paper bag, this is an easy way to collect the seeds.  Store them in an airtight container.
